Week 36 of the Ray Of Hope crochet along features the Shell Stitch. This is the closed version where all the shells fit tightly together.

The pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below in brackets along with the abbreviations we will be using
- Single crochet (double crochet) = sc
- Double crochet (treble crochet) = dc
You will need a 3.5mm hook for this piece.
With Colour R, make a chain of 80
Row 1. In the 3rd ch from your hook (turning chain counts as a sc) make a sc. Sc in each stitch across, changing to Colour F in your last stitch- 79 stitches
Row 2. Turn, Ch1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Make 2dc in the same stitch as your turning chain. *skip 2 stitches and slip stitch in next stitch. Skip the next 2 stitches and make 5dc in the same stitch* repeat between *and* make 3 dc in last stitch, changing to Colour I in the last dc.
Row 3. Turn, ch1, sc in the first stitch. *skip the dc and in the slip stitch make 5dc. Skip the next 2 dc, and in the 3rd dc of the shell make a slip stitch* repeat between *and* sc in the last stitch, changing to Colour R in the last 2 loops
Row 4. Turn, Ch1, make the alt turning chain in the first stitch. In the same stitch as your turning chain make 2dc.
*In the 3rd dc of the shell below (the middle one), make a slip stitch. In the next slst make 5dc in the same stitch* repeat between *and* make 3 dc in last stitch, changing to Colour F in the last dc.
Repeat rows 3 and 4, with the following Colour changes at the end of the row
Row 6 – Colour I
Row 7 – Colour R
Row 8 – Colour F
Row 9 is a repeat of Row 3
With a 4mm hook, join with Colour E (your joining colour) and make a slst into the side of each sc row, except row 1 where you make 2 slst. Make and 2 slst into the side of every dc row. Along the long side, make 1 slst in every sc.
You will have 14 slst across the short ends and 79 slst across each long side.
Weave in your ends, and join the piece to week 35
