Week 22 of The 50 Stitches crochet along features the Feather stitch. The Feather stitch makes a thick fabric with a beautiful pattern. It would be perfect for thick snoods and blankets.

This stitch is usually made up in an odd number of stitches, but I’ve adjusted our pattern to get the stitch count we need for our squares.

This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below.

UK Translation

Half double crochet (hdc) = half treble crochet

The Pattern

For this square you will need a 3.5mm hook

Start by making a foundation chain of 32

Row 1. In 4th chain from your hook (turning chain counts as a stitch) make a hdc. Hdc in each stitch across (30 stitches)

Turn

Row 2. Chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. *Chain 1, skip a stitch, make a hdc* repeat the pattern between *and* across the row. Make a hdc in the last stitch.

Turn

Row 3. Chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. 

Next we are going to make our first feather. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the same stitch as the turning chain. Yarn over and pull up a loop between the 2 hdc in row 1. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next ch1 space. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on your hook. Chain 1.

This first feather will dip lower than the rest, as this is an additional feather to get our stitch count right.

For the next feather. *Yarn over and pull up a loop in the same chain space as the one you completed the last feather in. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the skipped stitch in row 1 directly below. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next chain 1 space. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on your hook. Chain 1*

Repeat the pattern between *and* across the row. Your final feather will finish in the last chain space, then chain one and make a hdc in the final stitch

Turn

Row 4. Chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch.  Yarn over and pull up a loop in the chain space. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the chain space in the row below. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next chain space in this row. Pull your hook through all 7 loops then chain 1.  

*Yarn over and pull up a loop in the same chain space as the one you completed the last feather in. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the skipped stitch in row 1 directly below. Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next chain 1 space. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on your hook. Chain 1* finish the row with a hdc in the last stitch

Turn

Rows 5- 19. Repeat row 4

Turn

Row 20. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Hdc in each stitch across – 30 stitches

The Border

Along the top and bottom, make a sc in each stitch. In the sides alternate between 2sc and 1sc in each row.

You should have 30 sc down each side, plus an extra stitch in each corner for the turn. This will make your stitch count as 32 stitches across each side and 124 stitches total (remember the extra stitch corner stitch is counted in the stitch count for both sides)

You have now finished your square and join and you can tie off and weave in the ends
