The Embossed Block Crochet Stitch

The embossed block crochet stitch gives a beautiful brickwork like look while adding a layer of interesting texture with the Tunisian style posts. Its a hole free stitch that gives you a taste of the Tunisian crochet technique.

This stitch featured in week 43 of The 50 Stitches Crochet Along

You will need 2 colours for this stitch. A background colour and the accent colour you will use to create your embossed posts.

This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below.

UK Translation

Single crochet (sc) = double crochet

The Embossed Block Pattern

Start with a foundation chain in multiples of 4 plus 2 (plus 1 for your turning chain)

Row 1. In the 3rd chain from your hook make a sc (the turning chain counts as your first stitch) sc in each stitch across. Change colour in the last stitch

Turn

Row 2.  Chain 1 and sc in the first stitch. Sc in each stitch across, in the front loops only

Position of front and back loops

Turn

Row 3. Chain 1 and sc in the first stitch. Sc in each stitch across, in the back loops only

Turn

Row 4. Chain 1 and sc in the first stitch. Sc in each stitch across, in the front loops only. Change colour in the last stitch

Turn

Row 5. Chain 1 and sc in the first stitch. In the back loop make a sc. Make an embossed post in the next stitch – Insert your hook into the back loop of the next stitch and pull up a loop, then insert your hook in the front loop of the same stitch in the front loop of the stitch of the row below, insert your hook and pull up a loop. Do the same for the front loops of the stitches in each row down to row 1.

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Carry on earning over and pulling through 2 loops until you have 1 loop left on your hook.

*Sc in the back loop in the next 3 stitches. Make an embossed post in the next stitch* repeat between *and* finishing the row with 2 sc in the back loops and a sc in the last stitch

Turn

Rows 6 – 8. Repeat rows 2-4

Turn

Row 9. Chain 1 and sc in the first stitch. In the back loops only make a sc in the next 3 stitches. *make an embossed post in the next stitch. In the back loops only make a sc in the next 3 stitches*

Repeat between *and* make a sc in the last stitch

Turn

Repeat rows 2 – 9 until you reach the desired height
