This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below.

UK Translation

Single crochet (sc) = Double crochet

Double crochet (dc) = Treble Crochet

front post treble crochet (fptr) = front post double treble crochet

front post treble crochet 2 together (fptr2tog) = front post double treble 2 together

The Pattern

For this square you will need a 3.5mm hook

Start by making a foundation chain of 31

Row 1. Sc in the 3rd chain from your hook (turning chain counts as a stitch) sc in each stitch across – 30 stitches

Turn

Row 2. Chain 1, sc in the first stitch and in each stitch across – 30 stitches

Turn

Row 3. Chain 1, make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across – 30 stitches

Turn

Row 4.  This row can be tricky to get your stitches in the right place. It can make things easier to count out your stitches in advance and place stitch markers in both row 3 and row 2 where each stitch needs to be made.

Chain 1. Around the post of the 3rd sc in row 2 make a treble crochet (fptr). 

*In the next 3 stitches make a sc. The next stitch is a fptr2tog (front post treble crochet 2 together). Make the first part of the stitch around the post of the same as the previous fptr. Skip 3 sc in row 2 and make the second part of the fptr2tog around the next sc in row 2.*

Repeat between *and* sc in the next 3 stitches then fptr around the second part of the last fptr2tog. Make a sc in the last stitch.

Turn

Row 5. Repeat row 3

Row 6. Chain 1 and sc in the first 2 stitches. *Fptr2tog around the posts of the treble stitches made in row 4 on either side. Sc in the next 3 stitches* repeat between *and* fptr2tog around the posts of the treble stitches made in row 4 on either side. Sc in the last 3 stitches

Row 7. Repeat row 3

Turn

Row 8. Chain 1  fptr around the fptr2tog in row 6. *sc in the next 3 stitches. Fptr2tog around the posts of the treble stitches made in row 4 on either side.* repeat between *and* sc in the next 3 stitches. Fptr around the last tr stitch in row 6. Sc in the last stitch.

Rows 9 – 20. Repeat rows 5-8

Row 21 – sc in each stitch across.

The Border

Sc in each stitch across the top and bottom. 

For the sides make 1 sc in the side of every row with treble stitches and 2 sc in the side of each dc row.

You should have 30 sc down each side, plus an extra stitch in each corner for the turn. This will make your stitch count as 32 stitches across each side and 124 stitches total (remember the extra stitch corner stitch is counted in the stitch count for both sides)

You have now finished your square and join and you can tie off and weave in the ends
