For this square you will need a 4mm hook
Start by making a foundation chain of 31
Row 1. In the 3rd chain from your hook (turning chain counts as a stitch) make a sc. Sc in next 2 stitches. Sc in the next stitch, but change colour in the final 2 loops.
After each colour change give both threads a tug to make sure they are nice and taught.
*Carry the second colour taught against the bottom of the row. Make 5sc over the top of the carried yarn, changing colour in the 5th sc* repeat across the row making sure to change colour in the top of the last stitch of the row.
There should be 6 sets of blocks alternating in colour. – 30 stitches
Turn
Row 2. With the colour that you changed in the final stitch of row 1, make an alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in the next 4 stitches, changing colour in the final 2 loops of the last dc.
Carry the second yarn thread taught against the bottom of the row and dc in the next 5 stitches, changing colour in the last dc. *Make 5 dc over the top of the carried yarn, changing colour in the 5th dc* Repeat between *and*
Do not change colours in the last dc of the row.
All your colours should be the opposite of row 1.
Turn
Row 3. With the same colour you ended row 2, make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch, and make a dc in the next 4 stitches, changing colour in the last dc. *Make 5 dc over the top of the carried yarn, changing colour in the 5th dc* Repeat between *and* change colour in the last stitch of the row
Turn
Rows 4-13. Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Turn
Row 14. Chain 1 and sc in the 1st stitch. Sc in the next 4 stitches, changing colour in top of the last sc.
Carry the second colour taught against the bottom of the row. *Make 5sc over the top of the carried yarn, changing colour in the 5th sc* repeat across the row
Tie off
The Border
Make a sc in each stitch across the top and bottom. In the sides, make 1sc in the side of rows 1 and 14, 3sc in the sides of row 2 and 13 and 2 sc in the side of all other rows.
You should have 30 sc down each side, plus an extra stitch in each corner for the turn. This will make your stitch count as 32 stitches across each side and 124 stitches total (remember the extra stitch corner stitch is counted in the stitch count for both sides)
You have now finished your square and join and you can tie off and weave in the ends
You can now add the interlocking border, joining this weeks square to last weeks as you join. You can see how to do this here
